I was surprised at the interest in the crack-house dresser that I had painted. I had listed on CL and got quite a few calls. I even had multiple buyers for it on the same day. The person asked me if I was going to be doing any more like it. So, when I came across these two siblings, I thought I could paint one in the same fashion. So I did!
Like my garage??? 3 dressers (four if you count the one you cant see) a hutch and a buffet....all awaiting my time. Yeah, ok, sure...Ill get right on that. The two siblings are on the left with the oh-so fetching coat of arms brand-thing is what Im working on. The one below is the smaller of the two. I dont even know what that green/yellow monstrosity is, even the owner didnt know what it was. All I know was that it had to go bye-bye. Some wood filler and a good sanding, and away it went.
So...here it is,,,,crack-house dresser paint #2!
This one was in far better shape. I refinished the top and shined up all the brass hardware.

The top was refinished with Varthane gel walnut, wood sealer, and dark paste wax. I used the same turquoise and orange paint. The yellow was just something I had laying (lying?? I always get those mixed up...dogs lay, people lie..What about paint?? Hah!) around. The Hub polished up all the hardware on his polisher. Almost looks as though they brass plated copper!
The little brass studs were solid black. They shined up pretty durn good!!I thought this fabric went perfectly with the colors.

This is a really nice shot of my cats butt.Linking up to all my faves, see below......plus http://www.myrepurposedlife.net/</a>

I found this little antique dealer place down by the beach. He has all sorts of stuff. He offered this
chair to me for 5 bucks! Such a deal!!! Im decorating my sons girlfriends bedroom in shades of gray and white and black w/accents of purple. So I figured she could use this chair at the desk I re-did.
I will post photos of the entire room next week, but for now, here is the chair.
The cushion was in great shape.
Did a couple coats of CeCes in white and distressed. I have since distressed the cane
part so its not quite so stark white. And the purple in the photo looks quite, well, um purple.
Like something Prince might wear. Its actually more subdued in person. Little more on the lavender
side!

A little black trim to tie it into the grays/blacks in the room decor.
I wish the guy had a few more of these! 5 BUCKS! Unreal.

I found this nice little vintage mahogany desk the other day. It was a little beat up, but
nothing that I couldn't handle with sanding and wood filler and my magic!

Have you ever come across a pretty vintage lamp,
that caught your eye with a great price tag?
But the wiring is also vintage so you decide to pass because you think to yourself
*this thing may burn my house down*
Well heres how to solve that problem.
Make sure your lamp is not plugged in before you start.
Begin by removing the finial,
lamp shade, and light bulb,
With a flat head screw driver remove the little screw at the socket base,
before unscrewing the socket from the threaded post.
See the hidden wire decay, yikes!
Separate the top of the socket case from the bottom
by gently prying with a flat head screw driver then pulling apart.

The upper case is a like a sleeve you just pull off.
Now loosen the 2 screwed wire connections with your screwdriver, and remove the old wires.
Youre ready to remove that old cord completly.Just pull it all the way out the bottom of your lamp and toss it away.
Get your replacement cord ready,
and start working backwards.
Guide the new wire thru the base
and up thru the neck of you lamp.
Remember to threat your wire thru all your different little parts in order,
this lamp has several washers, a threaded rod, and a harp.
Screw your socket base onto the threaded rod and re-install the little screw.
Youre almost done!
Give the copper wires a clockwise twist then curl them over
to fit on your connection screws.
Tighten up the screws with your flat head before
sliding the upper sleeve back into place.
It will give a little click sound once it connects back to the socket base.
The time has almost come to plug her in.
Screw your light bulb in and re-install your shade and finial.
It took me way longer to write this tutorial than
it takes to actually rewire a lamp.
We found this lamp at a yard sale and used it in a room reveal that can be seen here.

So a few weeks ago I saw this dresser listed on CL. Hubs went by and took a look at it for me. It was wayyyyyy beyond needing some TLC. The lady said she got it from some crack-house with the intention of refinishing it! Um, dont think so! Hubs paid 15 bucks for this beaut.
I honestly almost said, "forget it" and trashed this hunk. So glad I didnt! Im in love with how these colors turned out!
When he got it home I thought, "Good Lord! What the heck can I do with this?" Most of the guides of the drawers were gone and the bottom drawer fell apart when I took it out. |
There was some sort of melted rubber stuck to the top. |
 |
Maybe used as a lion scratching post???? WTH?? |
I had to completely re-glue the entire bottom drawer. And for whatever reason, the front legs were different. Someone had shaved one side, and left the other original. We had to do some surgery to make them match.
So after a ton of sanding,
I uncovered a somewhat intact
wood top! Yay! It appeared to be a Honduran Mahogany wood, which has a nice reddish undertone to it. I refinished the top with a gel stain and sealed it with a shellac base seal-coat.
Heres the natural wood color. It wasnt in good enough shape to leave it, so I decided on very distressed look. Ive been wanting to try some different colors and I figured since I only spent 15 bucks, if it didnt work out, no biggy! So I made my own chalk paint again and used Martha Stewarts "yam" mixed with some other orange and golden yellow. I just coated the whole thing with that color and then went over it in MS "Hosta" mixed with "plumage" and a little green. I used a sanding block and went to town.
Everything got finished with Minwax dark wax, which really deepened the colors and brought out the wood tones beautifully!
 |
Her front feet match now! |
I lightly dry brushed the top with the paint (I had already refinished and applied a seal coat) |
Urban Outfitter knobs |
 |
I couldnt reuse the original hardware because there wasnt enough. So, I had to fill in the all of the inner holes and re-drill in order to accommodatethese pulls I got from Hobby Lobby. |
And to think I was actually considering just throwing this away! Never think the impossible cant be accomplished!
I had fun doing this one!
